Filed Under General | Leave a Comment
He is here! Well, he has been for 5 days now, technically - but I couldn’t get to my blog from the hospital and life has been crazy since getting home. Brayden was born @ 2:44am on July 23rd. He weighed 5lbs 2oz and he was 19 3/4 inches long. We have a video here(quicktime required) and pictures here.

The stork is circling

OMG! He is almost here! Kelley started having contractions on Saturday morning, early in the AM. We called the dr. when they were about 5 minutes apart, and they were angry that we didn’t call sooner since she was only 35 weeks. After spending almost 5 hours in the triage area, the contractions seemed to have calmed from the medicine. They sent us home. We spent most of the day hanging out with Chuck & Wendy, they helped me out a lot! Sunday morning, she woke up early again having contractions, about 13 minutes apart. We called the dr again and they called in an oral form of the medication they gave her via shots @ the hospital - those have been helping so far. When the pills start to wear off, the contractions come back pretty hard and strong, so I have a feeling Brayden Matthew Owens will be here very soon! We still have so much to do with his room and the rest of the house to be ready, but I can’t wait until he is here!
Oh, I am starting a podcast about Web 2.0, Web 2.0 Show.

A rut
Filed Under General | Leave a Comment
It is true; I have been in a working rut lately. A case where I *try* to work and get things done, but I just keep spinning my wheels. I suppose I have a partial excuse because my sister and niece were in town last week and we spent a lot of time with them. Now that they are gone, things are slowly returning to normal… Perhaps this is less of a rut and more of communication-itis, or over communicating with people. Sometimes you just have to shut off the IRC, stop IM, and close your e-mail in order to get anything done! I have always been a bit of a social person, so that is a hard thing for me to do.
Anyway, on the Agnda side of things, we are hoping to get the user config model put into place and working at some point today. This will give us the ability to actually start coding in user prefs for each page, because I hate to go back and recode something later. Once we get the tagging and events all paired up with the user model, we will start posting some screenshots for you to salivate over (mind you, this is my crappy css layout we are talking about) and hopefully draw you in with.
Stay tuned!

We aren’t crazy!

We always knew we weren’t alone in our ideas about calendaring - we just think we have better ones than everyone else :). Chris sent me this article about Airset and what they are working on. While I respect their effort, I think they are really missing the mark on a few things - things we are trying to get right. Why manage multiple calendars? Why only mobile phones? They are *MANY* more calendaring devices out there and ready to use. Our goal it to allow you to update/utilize your calendar in any way that you want. Our other big thing is why focus on so many broad features? They are tons of blog services and blog software available for customers already, why focus on something a few people might use? That is like odeo offering up Wiki pages for people, or something?!? Again, I applaud them on their effort, but I think some direction/focus can go a long way in building a web service.

Feeling Dark
Filed Under General | Leave a Comment
Have you ever just felt really dark, not depressed or angry, just evil. That is how I am feeling today - It is hard to describe exactly what I mean by it… This song came to me while I was in the shower, perhaps this explains - grey is a good word for it.
Nine Inch Nails - Something I Can Never Have
I still recall the taste of my tears.
Echoing your voice just like the ringing in my ears.
My favorite dreams of you still wash ashore.
Scraping through my head ’till I don’t want to sleep anymore.
Come on tell me.
Make this all go away.
You make this all go away.
I’m down to just one thing.
And I’m starting to scare myself.
Make this all go away.
You make this all go way.
I just want something.
I just want something I can never have
You always were the one to show me how
Back then I couldn’t do the things that I can do now.
This is slowly take me apart.
Grey would be the color if I had a heart.
I just want something I can never have.
In this place it seems like such a same.
Though it all looks different now,
I know it’s still the same
Everywhere I look you’re all I see.
Just a fading fucking reminder of who I used to be.
Come on tell me.
Make this all go away.
You make this all go away.
I’m down to just one thing.
And I’m starting to scare myself.
Make this all go away.
You make this all go way.
I just want something.
I just want something I can never have
I just want something I can never have
Think I know what you meant.
That night on my bed.
Still picking at this scab
I wish you were dead.
You sweet and perry ellis.
Just stains on my sheets.

Ninja Startups
Filed Under General | 2 Comments
I figured, meh, why not weigh in on the latest topic to storm the blogosphere (at least the small section I read) - Cheap startups. Some heavy hitting names have been posting about it… Joe Kraus, David Hansson, Om Malik, Mark Fletcher, & Chris Saylor (Ok, Chris may not be a heavy hitter, but he wrote a fine post!). Both Joe and Mark talk about starting a company on $100k and $50k, respectively, but I tend to disagree. Chris, Dave, and I have found that you can start it much cheaper than that! We figured out that you can start one for around $5k - that even includes leasing an entire server for the project. The only thing you need to remember is that you have to be willing to pour copious amounts of free time into your project, or the $5k won’t cut it. To quote Henri Ducard from Batman Begins, “Theatricality and deception are powerful agents. You must become more than just a man in your enemy’s mind.” I titled this post Ninja Startup, not because we are stealthy (stealth is a topic Mark has talked about before), but because you have to use theatrics to draw attention to your project. Odeo is a great example; they posted some info about their project then put up a mailing list signup with a semi-catchy layout. Odeo followed that with a post that they would give away an iPod to a random person that signed up. Brilliant, cheap advertising! Now, the key difference between Agnda and Odeo is that Evan and Noah obviously have access to much more cash than we do. I bet we could bang Agnda out in two weeks if we had the funding to work on it full time. That is one of the reasons Chris and I have struggled with the idea of VC or angel investing, we want to do this full time without selling our integrity (read: soul).
And, umm, what is with the lack of trackback interfaces on blogs? *cough* David, Mark *cough*
